Spirit of Place

Spirit of Place

08 May 2008 - 25 Jun 2008

Taupo Museum. An exhibition of New Zealand paintings offering an artistic ‘snapshot’ of early New Zealand, with an emphasis on the volcanic plateau. Curated by Auckland Art Dealers, Ferner Galleries, this exhibition of more than 60 historic paintings will be a major feature of ERUPT! Lake Taupo Festival in May 2008. During the 19th century, the wealth of ‘undiscovered’ vistas throughout New Zealand captured the eye of visiting artists. Their renditions have endowed this country with an artistic heritage for future generations to enjoy, and in some instances, their views are the only remaining witness to our past. All paintings are for sale.

Bell Tea National Three Day Event Championships

Bell Tea National Three Day Event Championships

16 May 2008 - 18 May 2008

With 150 entries received, the sport is retaining depth despite the increased cost of participation. The Bell Tea CCI*** (Advanced championship) has drawn 12 starters, and with the Olympic short-listed riders in Europe, the competition looks very open. But all will be hoping to impress the selectors with next year’s NZ Trans-Tasman team in mind. Interesting competitors to watch include Donna Smith, Te Awamutu, recently returned from five years in the States, during which time she rode in the New Zealand team at the 2006 Word Equestrian Games in Aachen. Smith’s horse Clifton Kudos, owned by Frances Stead, has been out of quarantine long enough to be prepared for this event, which will be his first back on New Zealand turf. Batucada Sound Machine

Batucada Sound Machine

17 May 2008

Dance till you drop to the massive beat of Batucada Sound Machine and their infectious funk family of samba, hip-hop, salsa, afro-beat, dub, Pacific and Brazilian firepower. Loosely translated, ‘batucada’ means percussive samba jam. BSM took that as their musical roots, in the early days with five drummers jamming in a dimly lit lounge bar, before progressing to a 13 strong collective that includes a horn section, two guitars, bass, keyboard and local hip hop kingpin, MC Hazaduz on the mic. Hot off the back of an acclaimed studio album Rhythm & Rhyme, and tours nationwide and overseas, the rising popularity and festive nature of BSM has resulted in the band making the bill at numerous well-respected events alongside global heavyweights such as Damien Marley, Michael Franti and The Cat Empire. Pretty sweet for a crew with links to Chile, Brazil, UK and Mangere Bridge. 9pm in The Crater Room at the Great Lake Centre, tickets available through Ticketek.

The enchanting story of Tibetan Carpets. Vi and her husband Richard Cotrell, founded the Trade Aid organisation in 1971. The cause of Tibet holds a special place in their hearts as Tibetan carpets were the first products they sold in New Zealand after they established their first shop. The carpets feature the traditional symbols and mythology of a culture in exile, and under threat within Tibet: symbols of religious significance, animals and birds, and mythical creatures like the snow lion as well as purely decorative designs. Not only is it a work of art, but each piece represents work and income for a refugee family.
