May 2008

Visually ERUPT, Lake Taupo Festival is adding a striking aesthetic to Taupo.  ERUPT flags, posters and billboards decorate the streets, staff in local businesses are proudly sporting bright red ERUPT tee shirts  (due to demand the Festival is now likely to make the shirts available for public sale) and more than 30,000 festival programmes have been snapped up.

The next addition that people living in and passing through Taupo will notice is the futuristic Geodome that has been raised by a ten tonne crane directly in front of the Great Lake Centre. Built locally, the geodesic dome will provide a meeting point and gateway to the Festival epicentre.

Inside The Great Lake Centre, designer Tony Rabbit is transforming the theatre into The Crater Room, a cabaret style space inspired by the fiery elements of the volcanic plateau.  EAT Catering, an offshoot of the popular eatery Replete will provide pre-show and post-show dining in The Crater Room’s custom built Ignite Restaurant and Bar.

Spirit of Place

Spirit of Place

08 May 2008 - 25 Jun 2008

Taupo Museum. An exhibition of New Zealand paintings offering an artistic ‘snapshot’ of early New Zealand, with an emphasis on the volcanic plateau. Curated by Auckland Art Dealers, Ferner Galleries, this exhibition of more than 60 historic paintings will be a major feature of ERUPT! Lake Taupo Festival in May 2008. During the 19th century, the wealth of ‘undiscovered’ vistas throughout New Zealand captured the eye of visiting artists. Their renditions have endowed this country with an artistic heritage for future generations to enjoy, and in some instances, their views are the only remaining witness to our past. All paintings are for sale.

Over summer the crew at Epic Events has been out breathing new life into the old classic trails. For 2008 we are on a mission to inject more hills into all our rides. Not huge hill climbs that go forever, just some good rolling climbs and drops combined with turns to get that flowing roller coaster sensation.
