Business in Taupo
a thriving provincial centre
The Taupo region is a thriving borough and is now becoming recognised as New Zealand's fastest growing provincial centre. The booming tourism sector and growing events calendar are helping paint a very bright future for this kiwi town. With its beautiful environment and growing economies this formally known holiday spot has a lot more to offer than first meets the eye.
The region has begun attracting a wave of young entrepreneurial business people eager to set in place plans for the future. From tourism to urban development this region is on the go! Check out some success stories and look at some serious opportunities in the Central Plateau.
Economy & Business
Taupo township is the primary commercial and industrial hub. Man-made forests spread over the district, particularly in the east, as growing conditions here are ideal. Sheep and beef cattle dominates pastoral farmlands from east to west, while the northern reaches are preferred for dairy farming.
There is an abundance of energy in the region that began with hydroelectric developments in mid-century. Now the growth is in developing our geothermal resources north of Taupo township.
Lake Taupo is a great place to do business, have a business or start a business. In fact we encourage it! And there's a definite bonus to being here - we call it lifestyle.
If you are living outside the district and are looking for business opportunities then we can steer you in the right direction.
In 2007 a range of people and organisations saw the need for cooperation to support Taupo District’s economy and decided to act on it. They have worked together to set up Enterprise Lake Taupo.
Enterprise Lake Taupo is the key economic development agency for Taupo District. Its role is to develop and implement a range of challenging strategic priorities to meet the needs of a dynamic and diverse community and to shape economic development in the Taupo District. It also acts as an economic development liaison with other parts of the country, especially our neighbouring regions.
Key contacts:
In July 2002, Taupo District Council reviewed service delivery options for tourism and economic development. Up until this time Destination Lake Taupo undertook both roles. The economic development role is now undertaken by Enterprise Lake Taupo with Destination Lake Taupo handling business development opportunities in the tourism area only.
