Geothermal Areas

a steaming wonderland

Within these areas you'll see spectacular steaming cliffs, metre high geysers, boiling lakes, bubbling mud pools and pumice.

The Taupo geothermal valley has soothed bodies, warmed homes and hotels, and supplied energy for industrial and commercial use. This magnificent exploding example of the earths volcannic core displays minerals and extreme lifeforms that can survive these boiling waters. The eerie vapourising steam of the geothermal valleys has a huge cultural significance to the Maori as these waters and mud were used for cooking, bathing, preserving, healing and spiritual use. Now these amazing dormant craters, steaming cliffs, and bubbling mud pools are the single most popular tourist destination for overseas and domestic visitors.
