Fresh Water Diving
Unlimited Visibility in New Zealands Largest Body of Water
Lake taupo is the last unexplored geothermal area in New Zealand, so in 1998 exploration of the Taupo lake bed was commenced, to research the large geothermal area believed to be beneath the lake bed floor. The Lake Taupo dive project was to dive on hydrothermal vents associated with the geothermal system located in an ancient 1800 year old vent from the last massive fiery eruption. The aim was to take sample vent fluids, hydrothermal samples, including rock, sediment and mineralised chimneys. Digital and still cameras were used to document visual images.
Scuba diving Lake Taupo needs experience and professional help because of the lakes location above sea level. To the amateur diver this requires skill in reading your depth guage. Please seek advice and assistance from a qualified professional scuba diving school or tour operator in the area.
