You'll discover mirror image lakes, secret trout streams, vast native forests, rolling farmland and friendly country villages. Tranquillity is offered here at this little village beside the beautiful Lake Maraetai.
Mangakino Must Do's
Watersports Lake Maraetai, Lake Whakamaru, Lake Atiamuri and Lake Waipapa were all formed as part of a hydroelectricity scheme and are extremely popular for water skiing, kayaking, sailing and other water sports. They are also a hot favourite for fishing with local anglers.
Go for a walk through the Pureora Forest Park and pay a visit to "Pouakani" Totara tree, the largest known Totara in New Zealand, which is over 1,500 years old and over 40 metres tall.
Enjoy a picnic at Mangakino's picturesque lakefront followed by a relaxing walk along the lake edge.
Play a round of golf, try out the challenging Mangakino course; enjoy the lake views and meet some of the local talent.
Dine in or take out. Local cafe/restaurants in Mangakino and Whakamaru offer a great selection of tasty homemade food.
Check out the Dams - park the car and walk over the impressive Whakamaru or Waipapa Dams. Visit the other historic Dam Villages of Whakamaru and Atiamuri.
