Our Region
untouched, unspoilt, uncrowded
The Lake Taupo region displays some of the finest examples in New Zealand of untouched, unspoilt, uncrowded country. Our region holds many natural wonders such as the largest fresh water lake in Australasia (created by the world's largest volcanic eruption of the past 5,000 years), the best one day hike in New Zealand, majestic mountain peaks and the countrys largest ski area.
We are the events capital of New Zealand and the trout fishing capital of the WORLD! And if this isn't enough, we have beautiful bush, sub-alpine hiking tracks, the freshest and cleanest streams and rivers imaginable, plus Maori heritage and their vibrant culture with plenty of legends and traditions to learn about. We have four parts to our region, Lake Taupo, Turangi, Mangakino and Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park.
Lake Taupo - Centrally located on SH1, Lake Taupo covers an area sketching from Orakei Korako in the north, to Tongariro National Park in the south. Here you'll be impressed with the scenery and amazed at the holiday options available. You'll find snow capped mountains, a enormous fresh water lake, pristine native bush, steaming thermal areas and one of the world's only Dual World Heritage Parks.
Turangi - Located at the southern end of Lake Taupo, Turangi is central to all the outdoor activities in the region. It has long been recognised as the 'trout fishing capital of the world'. Turangi is positioned right next to the Tongariro River, a fishermans mecca for over 100 years. This isn't all that Turangi has to offer however. Great activities like white-water rafting, kayaking, bushwalking and 4x4 bike tours are all easily accessible too. Don't miss out the historic village of Tokaanu, just 10 minute drive down the road. Tokaanu is famous for its hot mineral pools and geothermal area; there's also the option to kayak the Tokaanu stream, as well as beaches at Pukawa, Kuratau and Omori to visit.
Mt Ruapehu & Tongariro - The southern end of the Lake Taupo Region is bordered by the Tongariro National Park, a Dual Heritage site, and is only a 30 minute drive from Turangi. Within the park you'll find three ski areas including the two largest in the country - Whakapapa and Turoa. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing has been described as 'the best one day hike' in New Zealand. Exquisite bush, streams and sub-alpine hiking tracks can all be found here. This area is also huge in Maori culture and heritage.
Mangakino - A little off the beaten track, here in Mangakino traffic isn't an issue and there are plenty of wide open spaces to see. You'll discover mirror image lakes, secret trout streams, vast native forests, rolling farmland and friendly country villages. Tranquillity is offered here at this little village beside the beautiful Lake Maraetai.
