Mangakino
on Lake Maraetai
Sheltered down on contoured slopes is the peaceful lakeside village of Mangakino. At the junction of SH30 and SH32, Mangakino rests on the shores of Lake Maraetai . Surrounded by forests, lakes and rolling farmland Mangakino is a popular town for adventure activities and relaxation. The beautiful Pureora forest provides impressive bush walks and water sports can be enjoyed on the many lakes in the district. This is a small heartland community active in its sponsorship, employment, and amenities. Mangakino is a town with local businesses, community groups, a pool, and a golf course. The community holds annual events from regatta's and competitions, to arts events and parades. Since sections have gone to General Title, the freehold property prices have increased, especially those with lake views. Many houses have been purchased as holiday homes for those seeking a peaceful rural lakeside retreat.
History
In the late 1940's Mangakino was built as a temporary town to house the workers from the five hydro electric dams that were being built on the great Waikato river. All its facilities were purpose-designed and the layout planned before building started. Living conditions had to be on a par with those of other towns if skilled hydro workers and their wives were to stay. Since 1960 the town has significantly dropped in population to around 1250 people who have remained and chosen to stay in this very picturesque rural town.
