Orakei Korako
meaning 'place of adorning'
Orakei Korako is situated on the Waikato River at Lake Ohakui, north of Taupo on State Highway 1. Orakei-Korako Geyserland and Thermal Park is only accessible by boat across the lake. The thermal park has the largest Silica Terraces of their kind since the destruction of the famous Pink and White Terraces in 1886, on Lake Rotomahana beneath Mount Tarawera. A geothermal consultant stated that Orakei Korako has the greatest number of active geysers of any geothermal field in New Zealand, containing 23 active natural geysers with the most variable and most interesting changes.
Orakei Korako has a vast number of boiling hot springs to see, as well as the Diamond Geyser, the Soda fountain, and Ratapu's Cave. There are also mud pools and extensive bush walks to enjoy through areas of native flora and fauna.Take the time to visit this wonderful thermal park and enjoy the stunning Waikato River and Lake Ohakuri. There is a boat ramp at the thermal resort and trout fishing in Lake Ohakuri.
