Tongariro Alpine Crossing

a world heritage site

The famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing has dramatic scenery and unique land forms making this one of the best one day 18km treks in the world. The crossing is the length of Mt.Tongariro, with the trek starting at Mangatepopo and finishing at Ketetahi.  This beautiful mountainous walk rises to 1600m above sea level, over ancient and modern lava flows and beds of scoria. The climbs can be steep and the weather can be unpredictable. The weather in Mangatepopo can be totally different to what’s going on nearly 1000 meters higher and further up the track, so be prepared with the appropriate clothing, food and water.

This is a landscape of dramatic volcanic formations, tussocklands, alpine plants, and breathtaking views across the country to lakes of emerald green. This amazing nine hour trek through the Tongariro National World Heritage Park has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.

Take special care and seek information from the local i-Site Information Centre before setting off on this impressive journey.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is an 18km 8-9 hour trek in an alpine environment rising to 1886m. The weather changes dramatically and quickly and you need to be fit, healthy and well-prepared before starting out. You must be able to look after yourself.
