Waipahihi Botanical Reserve
praise to the dedicated volunteers
The reserve can be accessed from Shepherds Road in Taupo. Situated high on a hill, Waipahihi Botanical Reserve has spectacular views over Lake Taupo to the mountains of the Tongariro National Park. Established in 1966 as a park of native trees and plants, the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve has been developed and beautifully maintained by dedicated volunteers. The society has a membership of approximately 400 and every week up to 30 volunteers spend two or three hours tending the extensive gardens and maintaining the walking tracks within the reserve. The reserve is a valuable conservation gem surrounded almost completely by urban development and has become increasingly valued by locals and visitors for its quiet walks among native and exotic gardens.
The botannical reserve has 35 hectares of attractive gardens, a wonderful alpine garden, lemonwood walk and 2000 rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias that are a blaze of colour every spring. The wonderful plantings of native trees have become a refuge for several species of native bird. The yellow flowered kowhai tree is a favourite source of nectar for one of New Zealand's common songbirds, the tui.
This is a spiritual and naturally beautiful place - not only for the many walks, but also for the outstanding views. Take time to visit this tranquil woodland park of exotic and native plants for relaxation and pure enjoyment in a truly peaceful environment.
