Waitahanui Fishing Mouth
the picket fence
The very tiny lakeside settlement of Waitahanui is 12 kilometres south of Taupo on the eastern lake shore. It is a typical early lakeside settlement of tiny cottages tucked off the highway lining the Waitahanui stream.
The Waitahanui is so popular that the solid wall of regular anglers at the river mouth is known colloquially as ‘The Picket Fence’. Due to the popularity of the spot, it is not recommended for beginners as often anglers stand very close together and do not appreciate poor casting.
