A great spot to break your journey through the North Island.

Turangi is easily accessed by private car or bus. Being on SH1we have good daily services with Intercity, Newmans and Naked Bus. Car travel from Wellington or Auckland is approximately 4.5 hours, travelling by bus approximately 5.5 to 6 hours.

Venture south from Turangi and you can travel the Volcanic Loop Highway - approximately 175km round trip. The Loop encompasses the Dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park where the majestic peaks of Mt Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro follow you along most of the way.

Take the opportunity to visit the Tangiwai Memorial, and the National Army Museum in Waiouru. Look out for the Lahar path as you cross the Desert Road. The summit reaches 1,074 metres above sea level at tis highest point, which makes it the highest highway in the North Island.
